Where We Work

South Sudan Context

For about five decades, Southern Sudan had been undergoing protracted wars and conflicts with Sudan’s government that caused prevalent and persistent violence, population displacement and severe poverty in the region.

On the ninth of July 2011, South Sudan got her independence from Sudan following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army on 9th January 2005, which granted the Right of Self-determination for the people of Southern Sudan. As such, the country experienced a short period of independence, peace, stability and progress, but unfortunately, civil wars and tribal and sectional conflicts continued to be part of the country following the eruption of a devastating war at the Nation’s Capital on 15 December 2013.

The situation has worsened with the July 2016 conflict in Juba that caused humanitarian catastrophes and displacements of 2.4 million people as refugees in the neighbouring countries of Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya, among others. An estimated 1.7 million people are internally displaced, and 5.5 million people are subjected to severe food insecurity. The Country is severely subjected to hyperinflation and skyrocketing market prices.

According to the 2008 census, South Sudan had a population of 8.26 million people, and the current projection indicates that the population clocks 12 million. 83% of this population lives in rural areas, and 51% live below the poverty line. 55% of the poor population lives in rural areas, compared to 24% of the poor live in urban areas. The Country has a vast area of land with 644,329 sq. kilometres. 75% of the land area is suitable for agriculture, but only 4% of this total land area is cultivated.

Based on the information and challenges highlighted above, Hope Africa South Sudan has designed the following thematic areas.

Geographical Areas of Operations

Jonglei State, (Bor, Twic East), Western Bahr El Ghazal State (Wau, Raja & Jur River counties), Western Equatoria (Maridi), Northern Bahr El Ghazal, (Aweil East, Centre, North, West & South), Central Equatoria, (Juba, Yei), Eastern Equatoria (Torit, Kapoeta,), Lakes State (Yirol & Rumbek), Warrap state (Tonj South & North, Kuacjok), Upper Nile (Malakal)
